Historical Markers
Washington County, Alabama
The Washington County Historical Society oversees the county marker program. These markers can be metal community markers or Historic House markers. The community markers are submitted, approved, and paid for by the Society. Currently in 2025, the Historic House Marker Program is being reviewed for potential updates.
Three of our county properties are on the NATIONAL REGISTRY OF HISTORICAL PLACES:
• McIntosh Log Church
• Old St. Stephens
• Washington County Court House (New St. Stephens)
Many of our properties are on various state registries. Registries include these: Alabama Historical Commission, Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, and the Alabama Historical Association. We are working (in 2025) to make sure we have updated lists and photos of all the markers in Washington County.
